They say that monsters come only at night,
That light will drive them away.
But not all creatures follow this rule,
Safety not certain during the day.
Summer. The best time of the year. To me at least. No school, and hanging out with friends.
Today, I was hanging out with my closer friends, down that the empty lot of my neighborhood. A icy breeze brushed my skin, dusk falling fast, the only sound was everyone talking and the leaves and branches rustling softly.
He hides on the fringes of your vision,
Brief glimpses of the distorted.
He slithers and writhes behind your eyes,
Reaching for you, limbs contorted.
"Are you sure there's nothing out there?" Skyler was leaning his head from either direction, trying to see deeper into the woodlands.
Lauren rolls her eyes. "No I'm pretty sure your moms out there, hoping to scare you so you crap your pants!"
"Yeah, Skyler there's nothing out there." I reassured him with my hand on his shoulder.
Before you know it your children are taken,
And now it's come down to you.
His breath is oppressive, his presence acidic,
He feels pity is undue.
Adrienne let off a few sneezes before stating, "The air is a little thick... Though it wasn't humid today..."
"It's the air!" Robyn laughed as she started inching her way through the grass, pushing branches out of her way. ",What's the worst the air could do?!"
"Watch her trip on a branch..." Justin mumbled and followed after Robyn, Lauren, and Robert.
Suddenly, trapped in his grasp so tight,
You struggle to break yourself free.
He laughs and he gurgles and he screeches with glee,
He turns your head for you to see.
I walk beside Robert, hiding the anxiety of creeping around the forest at night behind my eyes.
It only got the better of me when I stumble on the root of a tree, tripping right into Robert.
Pretty classy. Especially for me.
"Way to go Mara!" Jordan snickers, "Way to fail."
Your children are crying though their eyes are removed,
They collapse, still and silent.
His arms and legs bend pulling you closer,
The man's eyes dark and violent.
I roll my eyes, "Shut it Jordan, I'll be sure to trip you next!"
"That wasn't nice!" He yelps as he catches himself before he keeps walking.
I feel a dull ache in my chest, my nerves giving out. "Dude, that wasn't me."
I pull out one of those keychain led flash lights, shining it on the leaf covered ground.
Nothing, no roots.
He strikes and he cuts, your skin flays open,
Your soul to weak to resist.
This should not have happened, if only you had listened,
Never go into his forest.
Five minutes later-
I trip also.
"And I thought I was clumsy!" Skyler laughed as he only kept walking.
It doesn't feel like a branch, it's not cold; it's like a hand. I shine my phones light on it, screaming as the white hand has its fingers going through my ankle.
I claw at the ground as the albino faced being has one, two, three or more hands touching me and dragging me.
No one helped. Last thing I noticed: A scream I still hear in my nightmares.
